Industrial Packaging
The materials used in shipping pallets and other industrial packaging, or dunnage, have advanced over the last generation. Exporters, domestic shipping companies, warehouses, retailers and manufacturers used wooden pallets in past generations to keep prices low throughout the supply chain. The rising prices of lumber and gasoline are only one of the reasons that wood pallets are less than desirable for growing businesses today.
Most businesses that ship high volumes of product around the world use pallets made of molded plastic. Businesses should understand the properties of polypropylene and polyethylene to ensure the best fit for their custom pallet orders.
Staying Ahead of Industrial Packaging Trends
Both high density polyethylene and polypropylene are used in heavy-duty shipping containers and pallets. Both of these materials are durable, recyclable and returnable. Both lend themselves well to washing operations so they are easy to clean. Also, they do not harbor pests as wood does so the use of these materials in exporting is preferable.
Many companies have received mandates to “go green”. Part of that process means switching to sustainable packaging. As an added benefit to doing what’s good for the earth, the switch to reusable, recyclable plastic improves a company’s bottom line. A multitude of options ranging from RFID, labeling, coloring, VCI or fire retardant additives, seatbelts, lids, urethane inserts for part protection and plastic sleeves make the use of plastic packaging possible for almost any application.
